The DRDA was entrusted with supervising and overseeing the implementation of different anti-poverty programmes at the district level. It was realized that there is an urgent need for strengthening and professionalising the DRDAs for effective coordination of different anti-poverty programmes. The Tamil language is known for its ancientry, richness of vocabulary and a canon of classical literature. For a long time, its depth uniqueness and glory were not known to the world outside. Great orientalists identified the literature of India with Sanskrit only. It is this woeful neglect of Tamil in the British period seems to have motivated a confluence of veteran Tamil scholars at Thanjavur to think in terms of starting an exclusive university as far back as 23rd of August, 1925. But perhaps due to the lack of official patronage of the colonial government, this glorious plan did not materialise. The credit of again reviving that noble aspiration goes to then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr.M.G.Ramachandran in September, 1981.
